Biochar is a fine, highly porous soil additive produced from waste plant biomass, and is enhanced with added organic fertiliser, worm castings, and compost to promote healthy plant growth. On a microscopic level, biochar acts as a sponge to retain water and nutrients in the soil, increasing drought tolerance in plants.
This product contains five species of beneficial bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi (Acetobacter sp., Azospirillium sp., Azotobacter sp., Bacillus sp., Pseudomonas sp.). These soil microbes convert nitrogen from the air into a form that can be absorbed by plants, replenishing bioavailable nitrogen as it is used by the plant. Soil microbes can also improve soil structure in the long term by breaking down the some of the hydrophobic compounds that cause potting mix to become water-repelling as it ages. These microbial species also improve the bioavailability of nutrients within soil, improving uptake by the plant and reducing future fertiliser requirements. Additionally, these microbes produce phytohormones (plant hormones) that aid seed germination and promote strong foliage growth.
Biochar can be incorporated into potting mix, garden soil, or coco coir at a rate of 5-10% total mass. Available in 2L bags.
